The Cloud

The Cloud

You've probably heard it said that the world has gotten smaller.  This is true because, since the development of the Internet (the 'Cloud') and such things as Tweeting, texting, instant messaging, social networking (Facebook, Instagram), we've grown much closer.  The distance between us, geographically, doesn't matter near as much anymore.

In many ways, this is a good thing.  But, in some ways - not so much.  While the world has grown closer together, we're also closer to those people who would try to hurt us or take advantage of us.  Most people are good - but it's easier than ever for those that aren't to target people who aren't prepared, or aware of the dangers.

So, you've just met a student who has NEVER been on the internet.  Their family just moved to the area, and just signed up for internet access at home for the first time.  Knowing what you know right now, what would you warn that person about?  What would you tell them to be careful of, when they're on the Web?  How would you tell them to behave - what precautions should they take?

You don't have to look this up - base it on what you already know - what you've already learned.  You CAN research a little on the internet if you need to...

  1. I would start by telling them almost right away to make sure they don't share any of their personal information online or over text. Nothing is technically safe on the internet. I'd make sure they're careful and don't click any pop up ads. I'd also make sure they don't click on a website they didn't intend on using. They should stay away from people they don't know. They should be behaved and keep themselves in check. Internet feuds can get you in a lot of trouble sometimes.

    4. I agree with your statement about how the internet is never safe

  2. I would tell them, most importantly, that they should stay away from unknown users online. I'd tell them to not trade information with people they've never seen, or to post it. I'd make sure that they did't come into contact with anyone unsavory.

  3. When you put in a gmail or apple ID, make sure to put in easy passwords to remember. Don't listen to marketers who try to call you. All they want is your money. Be safe on the internet. Last but not least, have fun.

    2. Hunter, you're a cool dude but you shouldn't make your password super easy because someone could easily guess it and then your social media could get hacked.

      Delete
    3. I think you should make passwords very simple so you do get hacked and you learn how to get your account back.

      Delete
    4. I agree with seth that way if you lose it in the future you'll know what too do

    5. Your password should always be strong, and as long as possible so that it is difficult for others to access your account.

      Delete
    6. Hunter I agree with your comment about don't trust anyone you never met before on the internet but I diss agree on making an easy password for a new account that would just give you hackers easy access to your account

    7. I agree with this because you should have fun but still try to avoid the dangers of the internet.

  4. If it is your first time on the internet you should be aware of the sites you visit. To protect yourself from stuff like Hacking and fake news. Plus never give any of your information out onto the internet.

    1. i agree because the sites that you can visit can have the people behind that website hack you without you even knowing they are doing it.

    2. In my opinion as long as you don't click on the fake news it's not neccisarily a threat

  5. When you go on the web don't talk to anyone or meet anyone in person that you have met online. Also be wary of stalkers, and don't put any personal information that they could track you down with. Don't send any picture that you would regret either. The internet could be useful and great, but also can be horrible.

  6. For someone who has never been on the internet they should be careful of the do's and don'ts on the internet. One of the things you should do or watch out for is to make sure you use anti-virus software, and to be careful when downloading programs from the internet incase they carry viruses. Some things you do not want to do is give out your passwords or credit car information. Also do not use your real name, address, or telephone numbers. I hope this helped you with your first time on the internet.

  7. If it was your first time on the internet you shouldn't accept friend request from people you don't know, if you are on a website and see a link that catches your eye don't click on it it might be dangerous. If someone tries to direct message you that seems sketchy block them right away.

    ReplyDelete

    1. i agree with you 100% one of my don'ts was, "when in doubt, block"

      Delete
    2. Your right Ty, even if their profile picture looks innocent, dont think twice about blocking them.

      Delete
    3. I agree, too many new internet users accept friend requests with strange accounts, which can open doorways to dangerous situations.

  8. I'd tell them to not give anyone their personal information and to only talk to people who you know and have met in person. Ignore the ads that say you can get something for free.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I agree with you Layla, those ads saying that you won something are annoying and dangerous.

      Delete
    2. The ads that say things are free could lead to credit/debit card hacking. It's a bad idea, so I agree with Layla. Stay away from the free ads.

      Delete
  9. I would start by telling them that you should never use your full name, address, or a picture of yourself. Just never share any personal information because people will take advantage of that and try to steal all your personal information. Also, never give out passwords or credit card numbers. But once you join the internet, you should consider some form of blocking and filtering software. You should also create long and unique passwords to protect your personal information.

    2. I agree Lili. A lot of people have to deal with a stolen identity and people catfishing with their name or their picture, so these are some very good points.

      Delete
    3. I agree Lili. Stuff can happen even when you don't give that information out.

      Delete
    4. I agree with you Lili, never give out your personal info. Especially your social security number

  10. I would tell them to not click any links, no matter what it is. Stay off of unfamiliar websites that could cause viruses on their device. Don't answer texts from unfamiliar people. Don't add random people on social media, don't post inappropriate content of yourself or others on any social media. And I would tell them to not post any personal information on any of their social media accounts.

    ReplyDelete
  11. A lot of people said don't click on links i think that is a important one because a lot can happen if you click on the wrong link and then all the sudden your getting hacked or there is a virus now on your computer just stuff like that you gotta be careful about.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Another thing is don't post your personal information, thats important because you never know what kind of people are going to look at that information and then all the sudden your getting watched or they hack your email or whatever you posted, you just have to watch what information your posting on your social media

    3. I agree with you Ethan, personal information should not be posted around the internet

    4. I agree with you Ethan 100% putting personal info on the internet is the worst thing you can do

  16. First don't give anyone your personal information. Sometimes you get random links from people and they can track where you are so don't click on any links that you weren't expecting. Don't text anyone that you don't know.

  17. I would tell them not to give out their personal information, don't click on suspicious links, and not to talk to random people over the internet unless they already know them.

    3. I'd say it depends on the situation, but i still feel like it'd be a bad idea, I don't care where you are on the internet, the bottom line is its still the internet, names can be fake, pictures can be fake, unless you know this person or have seen them around you simply dont know.

      Delete
  18. They definitely need to stay away from online users and do not post personal information

    ReplyDelete
  19. I would them to never put their personal info on because it seems whenever you go on the internet you always find some kind of scam or fake news and most important of all never click on sketchy links

    ReplyDelete
  20. I would tell them to set up privacy settings and try to avoid giving out personal info, like your school name, full name, what town you live in etc. Also they should avoid any ads or links saying that you won something.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I agree with you because if they had all the privacy settings turned on, they could post stuff they want to share with their friends. Although, I would still try to stay away from giving out locations.

  21. Putting personal info on the web has to be one of the most bad things you can do because you just put all your info out on the web where millions can see it

    ReplyDelete
  22. going on supicious links is never good it can lead to a virus bad imagary or even hackers the worst is a virus once its on your computer you can never really get rid of it without losing personal info

  23. If a new student came to our school and I had the job to teach them about internet safety I would teach them about social media safety first because I think that is the most important thing. Most likely the new kid would want an Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, or some type of social media account. I would help them set up the account and then turn their accounts to private and to only let people they know follow them. This way they could post what they want without worrying.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I agree and would do the same if

    2. i agree because if a new student needs help or need me to teach them i would help them because people shoud know safety online

  25. When it comes to the internet you have to be careful, there are a lot of dangers that you could put yourself in the way of without knowing you did it, such as giving a stranger any of your information, this can be easily avoided by setting your social medias to private and only adding people you know such as family and friends. Another thing is being careful about opening things people send to you, if a random person gives you a link id recommend for you not to open it, it could be a virus set up to either steal your information or ruin your computer.
