IoT: The Internet of Things

- The screen on your refrigerator tells you that your blood sugar is running low, so you grab some fruit.

- While flying to your vacation destination, you realize that you forgot to turn the thermostat down at home, so you do it from your smartphone.

- Your car is about due for an oil change (using that fancy synthetic oil you like), and your mechanic is ready for you because he monitors your engine, as well as his supply of synthetics.

This might sound like the future, or maybe you've heard of one of these things already happening - both are true. They're examples of what things might be like with the "Internet of Things".

In the IoT, EVERYTHING is connected via the internet (cloud): cars, appliances, planes, security, hospitals, animals and.....yes, you. The idea is that everything will communicate, and, in the end, this communication will help us to lead better lives.

"The Internet of Things is the next generation of personal computing, whereby objects interact, potentially independently, with each other and with their environment,”

"The Internet of Things is the combination of sensors, actuators, distributed computing power..."

"Tiny detectors that can gather and relay data about location, activity, and health...", "The IoT makes it possible to monitor and control the location, condition, and behavior of objects, machinery and devices through networks."

Here are some resources to look at that will help you understand the IoT. Take a look at them, and talk about what you think about the idea. Pros and cons.

We Need To Get The IoT Right

A Hacker's-eye View of the Internet of Things

  1. The pros of loT is it helps the ways of life be way easier, and I guess you could say it makes life run more "smoothly." The cons is there is a lot of information about you on the internet, and it could be kinda creepy having like sensors and stuff be turning on and off things or things running by just using your phone to turn it on, and things could break, technology is never certain. In the end I think it's worth having because it can be so useful to everyone in everyday life.

    1. i agree with u with how creepy having sensors and stuff all around you. i feel like its sketchy and there could be more to it and it could possibly be dangerous

      Delete
    2. I disagree too an extent, because those "sensors" all around you are making you life extremely easy, i think the main issue is the price of the products. Having things like Alexa and light sensors and things don't bother me

      Delete
    3. It is always nice to have life go right when you don't have time to do the dirty, but the sensor thing doesn't creep me out.

    4. I agree, people knowing everything about you, even if it does make your life easier, can be frightening. And what if a hacker got into your fully automated house? They could have complete control of everything.

    5. I agree with you Morgan

    6. I agree it is creepy that they can find all this stuff about you and you don't even know.

    7. Yes i agree with you. It can make life run way easier

  2. i think that some of the things are good ideas and that can help people with certain things. but there is a lot of pros and cons to some of them. i think that some pros are that they can help people with their health problems such as the blood sugar thing. some cons are that if the device was to malfunction and you didnt have the reminder that your blood sugar was to high or low.

    1. I agree Lili the health benefit is definitely a pro for the ioT, it helps you monitor your health.

    2. Especially if you can just look at your fridge and it tells you certain things your lacking, like that makes life so much easier

      Delete
    3. I think it would be great for the uses of health issues, but if it were to break or something went wrong it could be really bad for your health because you wouldn't be getting the care needed.

    4. Yes I agree with you, but a cell phone could also do the same thing and I think it is excessive.

  3. I think that, yeah, it's pretty cool that so many things are connected and stuff, but what do you do if any of those things malfunction or break. With all of your stuff connected, like car and refrigerator and even like, your entire house, it's possible for things to malfunction and go wrong. Or you could get hacked and that's the worst part of having everything connected. Once they get into one, they get into all.

    1. I agree...I don't think i would want to risk getting hacked especially when they are hacking into things in my house because they might find out where I live.

    2. i agree with you because it can malfunction and anything can go wrong. and i feel like u can get hacked with all of your stuff connected to everything

      Delete
    3. I agree it isn't good if you get hacked and your entire house is in another persons hand.

    4. Its true one thing i really hate about technology is when it does not work when it is supposed to.

      Delete
    5. i agree with you, if your stuff got hacked and there wasnt a way to get back into anything then would you have to get all new stuff?

      Delete
  4. It's really cool that you can connect to things in your house but if someone hacked into something that your connected to they could probably find where you live. I think that having your phone connected or something that says your blood sugar is low is a really helpful thing to have.

    1. i agree with you because i think the blood sugar connection things are the most helpful in my opinion

    2. The whole blood sugar thing is sketchy to me. If something were to malfunction, it could literally mean life or death for you and that's not something I want to put in the hands of the internet.

      Delete
    3. I think if someone really wanted to find where you live anyone has the power to do that now as is.

      Delete
    4. I agree no one has privacy anymore for anything. Now a days if you really wanted to know something about someone else you can go find it out.

      Delete
    5. No one has any privacy but if you need to know something you can find out very easy.

  5. The internet of things is a good idea and can benefit people with certain things. There are pros and cons, and i think that the pros are that they can help people with their health problems such as the blood sugar, help around the house with turning the lights off and on, some cons are that if the device was to malfunction you would've been relying on it to read your blood sugar for instance, and etc.

    1. I agree with you completely. You also have to think about the possibility of someone hacking your devices.

    2. True, if its a problem that you cant fix, then it will cost money to have a person do it for you. Thsi stuff could save your life tho.

      Delete
    3. I get what you're saying Brooke, but you shouldn't rely on your fridge to read your blood sugar properly. Personally I think you should see your doctor, not something that keeps your milk cold.

  6. I personally think that all these new products meant to make life easier are 100% good. The worry of them "melfunctioning" doesn't scare me at all because the worst thing thats gonna happen is you have too buy a new product which, ya its expensive but its still a positive thing to make life easier

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Sure it may be expensive when you have to buy it again, but if it were something for your health that could be a major risk to your life.

      Delete
    2. Yes it will make things easier but if it breaks it would very expensive to fix it and if it keeps breaking then you would have to pay a bunch of money.

      Delete
    3. I agree with you. It may be expensive if something breaks but look at the positive side of it

  7. I think that its going to be in the near future no matter if you like it or not. I don't think everyone will have it, but there is a good possibility it will. The security will always be a question because anything can be hacked theres always someone better at a job.

    1. Seth I agree with you I think it will be in the future also and their is also a scarce of being hacked or having bad security.

    2. I agree with you, Seth. I really don't like all the sensors that come along with modern technology, but it's going to stay whether people like it or not.

  8. I agree with layla about the blood sugar thing , she said it would be a good thing if, your phone shows your blood sugar, i feel like that would be a good thing because most people always keep there phone on them.

  9. I agree with Jackie how she said with all the stuff connected like your house and a lot more stuff it would definitely malfunction.

  10. There are good things about this loT like doing things that you don't have time to do, or that you don't know how to do. But there is also some bad things. The technology can malfunction and could have problems. Plus it gets to be way to expensive to fix and buying the technology alone.

    1. I agree with you Hunter, this technology does make life easier but their is always the chance of a malfunction with the device.

      Delete
    2. I agree with you Hunter. It can get very expensive to fix it and even buy it.

      Delete
    3. I agree with you . There is a lot of things that you dont know how to do and it is super expensive

      Delete
    4. i agree how will everybody get this technology and how expensive will it be to the lower classes of america this might not even be possible in the near future

  11. I agree with Lili how she said having sensors all around the house might be a lil creepy, also she said that it might be dangerous ,and i totally agree with that .

  12. Everything would be more convenient and easer to access. But i think people would be less connected together and more separated {physically}.

  13. I think there are good things and bad things about internet of things, it makes life easer the bad things are the technology may malfunction, can get way to expensive to fix, could be hard to find someone to fix it.

    1. I agree, what will people who have become completely dependent on technology do when it malfunctions? What if things become inaccessible
without their phones, or the internet?

      Delete
    2. i agree i dont like that nothing would really be personal and what are we gonna do when we cant turn off the oven with our phone with the technology coming out in this day and age is making everybody lazy and that is not gonna be good in the long run

      Delete
  14. While the internet of things represents extreme advancement in our society, it also threatens to make people even more dependent on the internet. Without knowing or caring to do things that we can simply do on our phones, we will be left unable to do simple things for ourselves

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. i agree with you because the more stuff we do online we wont be able to do simple stuff on our own.

  15. The pros of this would be it would make life "easier" supposedly but the cons would be a lot of your information would be out there on the internet for everyone else to see.

    ReplyDelete
  16. This would make life easier. It could also get really expensive. If there is a malfunction there could be problems. If it breaks it could be very expensive to fix.

    1. Of course it would make life much easier, but I don't think it's really worth it. The price of technology is so expensive that most people couldn't even afford this stuff. A solution to the problem of the price would be just do the simple stuff yourself such as turning of lights or getting your oil changed.

  17. In my opinion technology is way over rated. I think that voice sensor light switches are completely ridiculous. It really isn't that hard to stand up and go turn the lights on/off. Sensors are a waste of money. I would never spend hundreds of dollars on something that I could easily do myself. Also, it is kind of sketchy. If the sensors can hear you say on/off, could they hear the rest of the stuff you say? Could the companies be getting all of your personal information through a light switch?

    ReplyDelete

    1. I agree Hailey, it is kinda sketchy and I personally wouldn't spend hundreds of dollars on things like this also.

      Delete
    2. I also agree. Why would anyone spend hundreds of dollars on something so easy? Sounds pointless.

  18. I think technology is a good thing because it makes life easier. You can get in contact with your family and friends. Our future is going to be based on technology and I feel like it is a good thing you can get a sensor on your door that has your fingerprint and then you won't have to worry about loosing your keys.

    ReplyDelete
  19. In my opinion I feel like technology like this is too much. Sure it's great to have but voice activated light switches, speakers, it's all to much and super sketchy. If you have voice activated technology chances are the companions can hear what you say when you're not giving it commands and can get all types of info about you.

  21. Inventions that make everyday tasks easier could be really useful, but could also be pointless. Most people don't have the money needed to afford all of these high tech gadgets. Life was fine before and would be fine without it.

    ReplyDelete
  22. yeah the more we use internet we would be giving are information away and then the internet will know more about us
