The Data Brokers

The Data Brokers

After watching these 60 Minutes videos, discuss how you feel about the business of selling private information:

1. Should it be legal? People willingly put their information into questionnaires and online surveys, so marketers or "data brokers" are just using information that people have put out on the internet.

2. What, if anything, should be done about the practice?

3. If you've filled out a survey or shared personal information with a company, did you have any idea that they'd be able to sell your information?

4. From the second video, what do you think about the steps the woman takes to protect her privacy?

  1. I don't care if it's legal or not. People are putting their information on the internet, so they should deal with what may come out of that. Nothing should be done unless it gets to the point of harm to anyone. If your identity gets stolen, you shouldn't have put your information anywhere on the internet, so that's your fault. I had the idea they'd do something with it, what, I'm not too sure. The lady took the precautions she believed were necessary. That's up to her and I'm not going to judge that.

    1. i agree with you because whoever puts their personal information on the internet then they can't get upset when their stuff gets stoled because you put yourself in the trap.

    2. Agreed with you both, if its like credit card info, they can buy stuff without you even knowing.

    3. I agree, putting your information on the internet is a really stupid thing to do and someone's going to do something with obviously but if you press charges or whatever on them its kind of dumb since its your fault its on the internet.

    4. If people don't want stuff getting stolen like their credit cards, they shouldn't be typing it online to some store in the first place, and it would be your own fault if things like that got stolen because you were the one who put it there in the first place.

    5. I agree, the internet is a free format and one should go on knowing anything they put there can and will be used by others.

    6. I agree with you if people don't want anything stolen they shouldn't be putting it into the computer they can't blame other people for their mistake

    7. I agree with you they could buy things without you knowing.

  2. I don't really think it should be legal because why do data brokers or anyone really needs every information about a person. I think that the FBI or something should be involved to attack the data brokers to make them all stop doing what their doing. When I need to fill out my information to buy something, I don't really think about data brokers would buy my personal information, but why in the first place would they even want it?

    1. I agree with you with the FBI thing. They should totally get involved because the data brokers need to stop doing what their doing.

    2. They use the information to give us advertisements that more suit us. I think information should be used for such trivial thing, but I don't agree with a government system monitoring my activity.

    3. They want your personal information so that they can make money and become a profitable business.

  3. I dont think it should be legal because i dont think there would be a good reason for data brokers to have everyones information. I think someone should really go after these data brokers such as the FBI because this isnt right for them to do this. If i had to fill out my information for something i dont think the data brokers would buy my information.

    5. I agree with you data brokers should only have personal information on people that put all of their personal information about their self.

  4. People who put personal information on the internet is like taking candy from a kid. If your identity is taken you have to go through the process of getting a brand new one. I like the way the lady thought about taking precautions.

    1. i agree because the process of getting a brand new one must be a hard time, so people should never put their information on the internet.

    2. I think you're right Hunter. People need to be more careful in what they put on the internet.

    3. I agree with stealing information form people is very wrong, but I think that lady took it a little too far, especially with putting her phone in that bag thing.

    4. I agree people need to be more careful about what they are giving out for their information.

    5. I agree i guess i didn't see the video

    6. People just dont seem to think about this stuff . its very serious

    7. Hunter I agree with you it is really easy to take personal information from people. Also instead of having to get a new identity it would probably just be easer to be careful to watch what you do on the internet.

  5. It's a problem and they shouldn't take their information or share it, but people shouldn't put their information on the internet if they don't want to take that chance. It's like telling a secret in high school. You take that chance, but your secret could be told because it's like online gossip.

    1. I agree, personal information doesn't stay personal on the internet because people try to hack your stuff and get your information

  6. I think that this "information jacking," can improve peoples quality of life. While some information should remain quiet, marketers knowing what we want to buy allows for direct advertising, which is more convenient for everyone.

  7. I really don't care if people want my info but i don't want them selling my info without my permission. If i want people to have or not have my info thats my choice.

  8. II think that it should not be legal because I don't think data brokers should have everyones information. I think that the FBI or a federal organization should really go after these data brokers. If i had to fill out my information for something I don't think the data brokers would buy my information.

  9. I think it should be illegal to let data brokers see everyones information. i cant find a good enough reason for the data brokers too have everyones information. i do think the FBI should go after these people. If I had to fill out my information for something i dont think the data brokers would buy it.

  10. I don't think it should be legal because I don't think they need to know everyones information. The FBI should control on what people do online. If I fill out my information for something I personally don't think the data brokers would buy my information.

  11. it shouldn't be legal because its taking our information. information about us. maybe we dont want people knowing and they are just taking it to use thats not okay the FBI should do something about it.

    1. If you don't want people to know your personal stuff, then don't post it all over the media. If you get your identity stolen because you posted the wrong thing, then that's your fault.

    2. I agree with Hailey, if you dont want it to happen dont make your information public to everyone on the internet.

  12. I don't think it should be legal because it is the persons personal information. The FBI should go after data brokers. I think data brokers would buy my information.

    4. I agree with Hailey. People shouldn't post stuff that they wouldn't want random strangers having.

  13. I don't think it should be legal because its personal information taken and used to make a profit. I think it should be regulated, but it could take years for that to take place.

    1. I don't know if i think it should be regulated but I agree to an extent

  14. It doesn't matter if it is legal or if it isn't. People who put their personal information on the internet should be prepared to get their identity stolen. If you choose to put your name, your location, or pictures of you, etc., then it's your fault if something happens.

    1. i agree Hailey, People should be prepared for events like this because that's just the internet today.

  15. If you have information on the internet you should be ready to have it stolen. you should only really have your name on birthdate on there

    1. I agree with you Bryan, if you put it out there be prepared for what may happen and dont expect anything less.

  16. I don't think that living in hiding is a true way of life, everyone already had an idea of companies like that, but I don't think that constantly trying to hide is a way to go about it.

  17. I feel like when people put out their personal information they are just asking for something bad to happen like someone hack their account or something.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I agree with Layla how she said when people ask for your information, i feel like there going to take my account or hack it or something

  19. Another thing Bryan said, you should only put your name and birth date on the internet, no other information.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I agree with Hailey how she said if you put that information out there on the internet, its your fault if you get it stolen, i just don't think you should put anything out there except your name and birth date.

    ReplyDelete
  21. If you put your personal information out on the internet you are just asking for everything to get stolen. Also if your identify is taken you have to go through the process of getting a new one, so it would probably just be easer just to be safe and not put everything about your self out there.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I think it's legal, i mean if people don't want their information out there then they shouldn't sign up for things or give information to foreign websites. Nothing should be done about it because it's a personal choice and they should have to deal with it. Yes i do know they could sell my information because a website always puts out cookie policies and terms and agreements. It states they have some sort of your information so just deal with it.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I think if you put your information out to the public than it is your own fault if people find out things you didn't want them to. If you dont want them to sell your information than make your accounts and profiles private.
