Your Online Image #2
You are the young manager of a local ice cream parlor that is beloved by local families. You are looking to hire some teens for the summer when the shop is open late every evening. You require an application and at least one reference. It occurs to you that you could look on Facebook to find out a bit more about the applicants.
What might you find that would make you not hire someone?
Is there anything wrong with using Facebook in this way?
Below are a couple of articles that talk about how employers use social media to help screen applicants.
70% of employers are snooping candidates’ social media profiles
Employer’s using social media in hiring process: Why do they do it?

I wouldn't want to see my employees doing things that would get them fired from there job. I would hope they would just post good things, i personally as a manager would not even go on peoples social media sights anyway.
ReplyDeleteTrue. I think it's important to look at things like that because if you hire them, things they post may have an affect on the image of your business.
DeleteI agree with you 100% I think that they should have privacy for themselves, but you just have to hope they are doing good things. I wouldn't go on their social medias and i will hope they do good on the job and not be a bad influence.
DeleteAs much as they should have privacy for themselves, they have to realize that Facebook is open to the public and just by searching your name things can come up from your Facebook that may be bad.
DeleteI agree shane, people should also have privacy and have to trust them.
DeleteI agree with you Shane, people should be allowed to have their own privacy
DeleteI agree with shane they shouldn't try too intrude on your privacy
DeleteI disagree Shane. If you didn't check someones social media and they had a bunch of bad stuff on there then I hired them. I would be mad at myself if they showed up to work late or not sober.
DeleteI think that it is okay to check your future employee's facebook, instagram, or any other type of social media. I think it is okay because you are learning new information about their life and the kind of things they do. Sometimes it is good just to be safe about whether or not they are good people and are worth hiring.
ReplyDeletei agree, looking at their posts and stuff can give u an idea about how they are as a person and if they are really worth hiring because you wouldn't want anyone with a bad background.
DeleteI like ur thinking Brooke, its always a good idea to look into there reputation by looking at there social media profiles.
DeleteI agree with you Brooke
DeleteLearning about your future employees life is a good idea. You don't want to hire someone without knowing about them.
DeleteI think it is not bad to check there social media to know more about them, but you cant bring anything cool up with them that you saw on there social media. they would probably get weirded out knowing you are always looking at there social media life.
DeleteIt's true . You need to know as much as you can about them
DeleteI agree Brooke, you make such a good statement about checking their social media's. I feel that they should be able to check the profiles.
DeleteThings that would make me not want to hire someone by looking on there face book is, posting stuff about using drugs, drinking alcohol, and there attitude on it. I think using facebook to get a little info out of them is a good idea. It is a public social media app so it is legal.
ReplyDeleteI think you're 100% right on that. Things people post might have an effect on your business's image in the world, so it's important to know a bit more about who you're looking to hire.
Deletei agree because looking at their posts you can kinda see how they act and maybe see their working ability and if they are really meant for the work they are applying for.
DeleteRight, you wouldn't want to hire just anyone to be responsible with your whole business and money that goes into it.
DeleteI agree Hunter looking at someones facebook and finding out they do drugs and drinking alcohol would make me not want to hire them.
DeleteHunter I agree with you 100% that facebook is a public social media account and that you can use it to check to see what that person is actually like and to see what that do with their free time.
DeleteI would not go on there social media after hiring them but i agree with if i saw them doing bad things i would not hire them.
DeleteI agree with you . Social Media shows a lot you cant hire idiots that don't know what they are doing
DeleteI completely agree. If a worker of mine is an irresponsible person, i have a right to know what im getting myself into in hiring them.
DeleteI would look at things like posts that they put up. The profanity the might use or the types of pictures they might post. If they aren't good or appropriate, then I more than likely won't hire them. I would also look at who they associate with in their free time. That gives me a good idea of what they do in their.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you because looking at there picture gives you an idea of what the person is like

ReplyDeletepersonally if i was a manager or something i wouldn't like to look at my employees social medias. But i think finding like pictures of drugs and stuff like that would def. worry me and make me not want to hire them. I think if u are doing bad things, u shouldn't be posting it on facebook because everyone can see it, and if u don't want anyone seeing it then make your page private.
I agree Lili if you don't want anyone seeing anything about you doing drugs or alcohol I wouldn't post it in the first place.
DeleteLili I agree with you 100% because you should post pictures of you doing bad things.
DeleteI agree that you shouldn't be posting such things in the first place, and I think if you are the account should be closed. But I do think an employer has a right to check your social media before hiring you.
DeleteI agree with Ez that they do have the right too check ur social medias
Deletei agree with jackie and shane how they said, it would be nice to know what your employees post on there social media, so you know its nothing that is going to effect your business.
ReplyDeletei agree with Lili how she said if there posting drugs or anything like that, you definitely don't wanna hire that person because that is a bad example for your business.
ReplyDeletetheres one more thing that Jackie said that caught my eye, she said that the profanity on people posts could affect your business, i agree with that because you don't want some one posting that kind of stuff on there story, it would be a very bad example of your business
ReplyDeleteI agree, the things that employees post or do can really effect your business and could even shut it down.
DeleteIf I were hiring, I would look at their social media accounts, because people can be fake, and tell you lies. I would not want a creep working at an ice cream shop where families and kids come to. Also I wouldn't want someone who might steal, or is irresponsible. Things that might concern me on their social medias could be drugs, alcohol, and just other bad things in general. I don't think there is anything wrong with people looking at their facebook because it was their decision to make one, and they will obviously know that people an see your page, and the things you do, unless it is absolutely private.
ReplyDeleteMo ur a geniuos, you cant trust anyone until you actualy get to now simething about them.
DeleteThanks Hunter
DeleteMorgan I agree, people can be fake and their could be things that might concern you and to not hire people that might steel anything.
DeleteI agree with you Morgan you want reliablilty

ReplyDeleteIf I were hiring, I would skim through the person I'm hiring social medias just to see how the person acts, if I can tell how their attitude is/ personality etc. I wouldn't look too hard because people like doing different things in their spare time so it wouldn't really be my right to judge someone based off what they do. Someone could like drinking with their friends on the weekend but be a really nice, hardworking person when they have to work.
ReplyDeleteI understand where you are coming from about someone being able to post pictures of them having a good time with their friends at the bar. There is a huge difference between that and a person posting pictures with alcoholic beverages in their hand every day. That could show the bad side of that person. Instead of skimming the profile, I would look in depth.
DeleteI understand where you're coming from Hailey
DeleteIf I was a manager or a business owner and I was hiring I would definitely look at everyones social media that was applying for the job opening because if someones applying and it looks like they are a hard core partyer or if they do drugs personally I would not not to hire someone like that.
ReplyDeleteI agree, Ty. If someone has a bunch of pictures of them drinking it probably means they drink a lot. I wouldn't want to hire someone who is an alcoholic. Especially if the person was applying at an ice cream shop where families with young kids go. The kids don't need to see that at such a young age.
DeleteIf I was hiring someone I definitely would look at their Facebook, Twitter, and/or Instagram. This would help me understand more about this person, whether they party a lot or not, if they are involved with their school such as sports or clubs, and what kind of people they surround themselves with. All of these aspects would help me understand the person applying for the job. But a persons actual image is just as important as their online image. What their social media accounts show is just part of a person. What would make or break my decision is how the person acts at the actual interview, how they are dressed, their manners, ect. That is what matters most.
ReplyDeletei agree with you Hailey i feel like i would know them better.
DeleteIf I was hiring someone I would look definitely look at their Facebook and Instagram. If I looked at their profile I feel like I would know the person better. You will know a lot of things about them if they don't have their account private.
ReplyDeleteIf I was hiring someone to work for me I would look at there social medias for sure. I would want to see drugs, alcohol, or illegal things.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Kelsey I sure wouldn't want to be hiring someone that does all of that stuff.
Delete* would't
Deletewow kelsey i cant beleive you would wanna see those thing i certainly wouldnt put in an application if i knew what you want in your staff
DeleteIf i was looking to hire someone i would check mostly just facebook because everyone has a facebook, not everyone has instagram or twitter . I wouldn't want to hire some deadbeat off the street
ReplyDeletei agree bry guy that is a very good strategy on hiring your staff
DeleteI agree with you because I wont want to hire someone unless i looked at there facebook.
Deletei wouldn't hire someone i would look at there facebook to make sure they dont do drugs or anything illegal.
ReplyDeleteI would do the same thing but i would try to look at there other social media in just in case they did drugs but they just don't post about it on facebook because its to public or whatever.
Deletei would check all social media fb insta all that and make sure its all kosher with the person im gonna trust to work at my business
ReplyDeleteI think I would look for what the person does in their free time. I'd want to be sure that a worker i was hiring was responsible and that I could trust them to be in a leading position. I think that using social media this way is ethical because it's just another way to really know a person, and if an account is not private, there's nothing wrong with looking at it.
ReplyDeleteI agree with what you are saying Ezra you want to make sure they are responsible so you don't have to worry about if they are going to be on time or not
DeleteI would want to look at their social media and their background to see what the person is like and if it would be a good choice to hire them.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree Layla, i would want to look at a persons background to see if they're a good hire.
DeleteI agree. I would definetly want to know who I'm actually hiring.
DeleteI would want to look on their social media to see if they had problems in the work place before hand.
ReplyDeleteI agree Seth, I would look to see if their other employer had problems with them working or anything else.
DeleteI would look out for big red flags such as, Drug use, often partying, and past jobs he may have been fired from, but i wouldn't go too extreme
ReplyDeleteI think before hiring an employee it is a good idea to check their social media's and profiles for information on them. You never know if they could be posting about drugs, alcohol, or other bad things. You would want to make sure your employee is worth hiring.
ReplyDeletei agree Abbey, knowing what this person post is important because you want a reliable worker.

ReplyDeleteI think its a good idea to check your employees social media because i would want a reliable worker and not someone who puts themselves out there in a negative way. You want someone who is a reliable worker and can be hired for any job.
ReplyDeleteI think you should always check your employee's social media because it can show many things such as what kind of person they are or if they party a lot.
