AI: Friend or Foe?

AI: Friend or Foe

In the 60 Minutes (Australia) video below, it is suggested that AI (artificial intelligence) and/or robots might eliminate some, if not all jobs that humans currently do.

We've discussed the topic of automation before, when it was discussed that, currently, there is a balance, because some tech jobs are created to support the new automation. But, as they talk about in this video, we could very well reach a point where the lower-skilled jobs are no longer out there - what do we do?

Do we need to "put the breaks on" this technology development? Just stop at a certain point, to preserve what we have now - or steer the development away from areas (such as low-skilled) where jobs might be eliminated?

  1. I've said it before, so I'll say it again. I think that we need to slow down on the production of all of this tech. I understand that they want to fit robots into human jobs because there'll be the potential for less error that humans make and the business won't have to pay people to work, but that'll put so many people out of work, our poverty rate will go up ten fold. I hear a lot of people saying that we can fill the jobs of maintaining the robots and machines and programming them, but the thing is, there are a lot of people who aren't educated in that. Then those people who were put out of work by the robots won't even be able to afford an education if they want to take one of those jobs. It's going to screw a lot of people over and i think we're moving a little to fast for our won good.

    1. i agree, robots are putting people out of work. If robots are going to take the low skilled jobs, more and more people are not going to have a job.

    2. I agree with you, robots taking over jobs how are they gonna pay for stuff that they need especially an education without the money.

    3. Your right robots are slowly taking over what used to be a humans job.

    4. I agree, humans should come before robots. What if someone spends thousands upon thousands of dollars on schooling for that specific job just for . a robot to take over it? Kind of a kick in the face

    5. i agree how do you fix unemployment by making more machines that put people out of jobs.......smart

    6. Once this takes off the unemployment rate will skyrocket. This is not going to turn out well

    7. I agree Jackie, we definitely need to slow down the production of technology and robots shouldn't put people out of work.

    8. I agree, but i don't think anyone will slow down because everyone wants to be the next big product or company and to do that they have to work day and night to be the best.

  2. I think that all this technology is great and it could definitely be used, but i think its taking up a lot of jobs that people need. Low skilled jobs should not be controlled by technology because people need jobs and i don't think a robot should be taking over a low skilled job that a human could do easily.

    2. I agree with you to Lili ,robots shouldn't be taking these easy jobs, also people need jobs more than robots we have homes and were living un like them

    3. i agree with you too lily why make our current problems worse

    4. Yes i agree with you. This technology is going way to far

    5. Lili you are right. technology is great. The low skilled jobs are jobs for robots because robs don't have good interaction skills like humans do.

    6. Technology is bound to advance more and more every year. The overpopulation of our planet in addition to a growing amount of robotic workers will definitely lead to the decline in available jobs, we need to be able to contril the worker robot influx.

  3. I agree with you completely Lili. The jobs being taken aren't ones that robots should be doing. They should be doing things like high-skilled, precision based jobs that humans can't do.

  4. I don't think a job could be eliminated, and there are already a lot of people in America who are unemployed, so why should we have robots take our jobs? Robots are nice and all but not nice enough to do our work for us, also robots have technical issues, and it could interrupt a whole day of work, also I think it is stupid that you would still have to pay the robot by the hour.

    1. I agree Morgan. There are so many things that could go wrong in using robots in place of humans and that would mess up a lot of industry. Things are starting to go a little too far with robots.

    2. I agree with both of you, robots how a lot of malfunctions and they could randomly stop working and it doesn't make any sense to pay a robot by the hour.

    3. This statement is true, robots can do the job but when they screw up, it can hold up production for a while.

    4. I agree Morgan, that robots have so many things that can go wrong while humans on the other hand don't.

    5. I totally agree Morgan how robots can have issues and then it could just mess the whole day of work, thats why we work not robots.

    6. i agree, robots are great for certain jobs but not for the ones that are low skilled that people need. A lot of people are already unemployed and these robots are not helping. You cannot count of these robots because they can malfunction and ruin the job.

  5. Like everyone else is saying, we do need to slow the production of technology down. It has impacted our lives in many good ways but also in so many bad ways. If robots ever take over our jobs which some already have, so many people will lose their jobs. Plus the robots can malfunction which can get irritating.

    1. I think the people would need jobs more then a robot would and if a person messes up they could at least tell someone a robot can't.

    2. I agree Hunter, we need to slow down. Robots will sooner or later take over and humans won't have jobs anymore.

  6. What are people going to do when robots take their jobs? Sit around all day doing nothing, walk their pet etc? As fun as that sounds people actually enjoy working and having something to do throughout the day.

  7. Jobs can't just disappear but there are already a lot of people in America who are unemployed, Robots can be nice but I don't think they could do the same job as a human because humans have better interaction skills and can't malfunction. If a robot malfunctions they can't work for the rest of the day, while a human doesn't have that problem.

    4. i agree Brooke, robots are taking the low skilled jobs leaving humans out of work. Humans do have better interaction skills compared to robots.

    5. This view , I believe, is valid. Human workers, in some cases, can be superior to the robot. But companies don't want to have to pay workers, and multiple "backup" machines could be manufactured to be able to keep work always going. Not to say I don't thing human workers should have priority workers, but every person should be given the opportunity to earn a living.

    6. I agree jobs dont just disappear it's not always the same thing as what humans are doing

    7. We build robots to help humans but yet there making thousands of people unemployed.

  8. I think all the technology and could use them in the future. Some people won't have jobs because some of them are going to go out of business. It's a good thing and a bad thing but i think it will be bad because some people won't have jobs.

  9. I think robots can be good and bad. The pro's are that this technology could be useful for certain jobs but the con's are that it could eliminate a job from someone. There is already a big increase in the unemployment rating and continuing to make these robots will only increase the number. What happens if the robot malfunctions and can't be used the rest of the day? I'm sure some jobs have a back up robot or a back up person to come in but is that person suppose to sit around and hope they will be able to work that day? I'm pretty sure a human being needs more money than a robot. I also think a human would be able to work better than a robot. A human doesn't have to worry about themselves malfunctioning. People can also have human to human interactions while a robot can not.

  10. I don't think we need to slow the production of technology down. Robots can be both good and bad. The bad this are that they are taking some of our jobs in the work industry. The good this is that robots is that they can be very useful. Jobs don't go away but they do take jobs away from people. Robots can be hacked and malfunction.

  11. AI technology could advance our way of life significantly. Without the need for human workers, work can be done nearly 24/7. A sleepless worker is so much more efficient than one who needs rest. On the other hang, human beings are still human beings, people need to be able to support their families, to be able to live. We need to find a balance between having robotic workers, and being able to supply jobs to human workers.

    1. Even if they work 24/7 then the market would be flooded with too many products making the price of things to go down

  12. I think that robots could be a good thing but also a pretty big mistake. It's good to have robots for some jobs because they can get done consistently and fast. But robots are not good for our economy, we already have a pretty high unemployment rate and robots are making it worse. In the near future people are gonna rely on robots to do jobs for us, forcing us to not work.

  17. i Think robots shouldn't be working because people love there jobs and i love my jobs and people need money to pay bills and for food.

  18. I think this robot thing has gone way too far, seriously they are starting to looks and talk more like humans every year. Also robots are taking away way too many jobs, also if they do take over a lot of the jobs they could malfunction they could slow down the process and someone would have to go in to the process and figure out a way to fix it. them

    ReplyDelete
  19. I think that we need to stop making robots. They are sooner or later going to take over human life. It's easier for businesses to have robots do human work, but it's screwing us humans over because there's not enough jobs for us.

  20. I think that getting more technology is a good thing. But i think that it is going to fast and taking way too many jobs from people.

  21. I think with every new technology there will be new inventions, but i don't think we need them to do everything that we do. The unemployment rate will sky rocket.
