You're Messed Up!
You're addicted! You're messed up!
Read the following articles (don't forget to read some of the comments after the articles). They all talk about the effects on teens from social networking, texting etc - all of this "new" technology.
What are the dangers? We're not talking about why the internet itself is dangerous - not talking about predators. We're talking about quality of life here - your time; how social networking makes you feel about the world, and how it conditions you to behave. "Real life" vs. "online life".
Your first post should be about what the negative effects of your online life might be. How might things like social networking (Facebook, Twitter) affect you in a negative way. This is a difficult question, because you probably don't think that these things really are affecting you negatively. You can handle it, right?
THEN, after a day or two, in your response to a fellow student's post, argue in FAVOR of social networking - how does it 'enhance' your life - how does it make your life better?
This is a 'deep topic'. One sentence answers are NOT going to cut it, so really think about your answers, and argue your point.

k i think social media is affecting us well me bc all i do is sit in my room and look at facebook even if i'm out side hanging with my friends i still look at my phone all the time just scrolling through facebook looking at memes.
ReplyDeleteI can relate to this to, and I feel like if I wasn't on my phone all the time I would do better in school because when i'm in class all I worry about or think about is who messaged me.
DeleteSocial media isn't always bad. If you don't sit on your phone all day, then it won't affect you. You should limit yourself to screen time.
DeleteI think that social media is a double edged sword. There are definitely people it has effected negatively. It may have caused problems in concentration, or prioritizing things, peoples lives may have been consumed by the virtual world. But from many of us, social media has only expanded our social lives. It allows more opportunity to meet with people, and expand relationships between people. I feel as though the negatives can be outweighed by the positives as long as we don't let the dangers of online connection overtake us.
ReplyDeleteI like your thoughts Ezra, people talk more on the social media apps then they do in person.
Deletei agree you with ez, some people have been using it either for the wrong ways that could definitely effect them negatively, but it is good to use social media to meet new people and interact with others, and just to have fun and entertain yourself
DeleteI think you're right, but it's also good to think about people who might be in a long distance friendship and are unable to see each other in person.
DeleteI totally agree with you Ez. I think you made some really good points.
Deletei agree with everything you sed here because its true people need to be careful.
DeleteI agree with you Ez, people need to talk to more people face to face then on social media
DeleteSome teens are shy when it comes to talking face to face with another person. But they have no problem talking to that same person on snapchat. The world goes on social media way to much now days. I myself go on it to much even though i don't think I do. The media apps can ruin friendships.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you, social media is changing how people think they should interact with someone. they hide behind a screen and they don't know how to have personal interactions with people.
Deletek The only reason why some teens are shy to talk in person is because you see there reaction on there face. With snapchat and talking app you don't see it so it makes it a lot easier texting it is stead of talking in person. I know i'm shy when it comes to people in person thats why I text. That also means social media is ruining our social skills
DeleteI agree with you, but I also disagree in a few ways. People who aren't able to see each other but need a way to communicate use social media. There are good thing about it, but every good thing may come with a consequence.
DeleteI agree with you hunter, talking to someone on snapchat can be easier than talking in person or face to face. That's why people need to have a comfort zone of talking in person.
DeleteHunter I agree with you 100%, I think everyone goes on social media way to much and I think I go on way to much also. Hunter you made some very valid point's this is really well writen
DeleteI agree with you hunter. I, myself know I go on social media way too much so I do think you're right when you said everyone goes on social media too much
DeleteI think the fact that communication is made easier, but the shift of being comfortable talking in person to only being able to communicate over text may have major impacts on our futures.
DeleteI Agree with you. Some people just talk to people on snapchat and other social media but I know i do that sometimes.
DeleteI Agree with hunter People really need to lay off the phones when with friends
DeleteNegative effects of the internet are the lack of being social in real life and not knowing how to communicate because of all the abbreviations and slangs that people use on the internet. A lot of drama that happens in real life at school or something always starts on the internet.A lot of friendships are ruined because of stuff that happens on social media same with relationships.
ReplyDeletei can relate to this layla because people try to ruin my friendship with my friend and there is non stop drama on online
DeleteTo add to this a little bit more a lot of people hide behind their phones because their to shy. It's easier to say things to people on the internet than face to face
DeleteWhen people meet for the first time in school and go home look on there snapchat stories, they see something bad that there friend posted. so you would think of your new friend a whole different way.
Deletei think social media is a good and bad thing. i feel its a bad thing because it effects the personal interaction that we should need. Just think about how you are talking to someone through a computer or phone but you aren't using in person interactions because you are hiding behind a screen. But the good thing about social media is that we get to interact with new people, for example a person you couldnt meet up with due to distance. It is nice to meet new people and create new relationships with people.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you being able to keep in touch with long distance relationships weather it be family and or dating, it is good to keep in touch. It could also be scary meeting people who you met online because you don't know if they are fake.
DeleteI agree Lili with the way you should interact with people in person rather than texting online. On the other hand i agree with using social media for long distance with family or dating.
DeleteLili I agree with you both statements about social media being a bad thing because you are hiding behind a screen and not actually interacting, and a good thing with being able to find new people on social media.
DeleteI agree with you whole heartedly. While we should take advantage of tools given to us, it is important not to lose sight of interpersonal values.
DeleteI agree with you, social media can be good for long distance relationships, but instead of texting you could use face time or Skype. I prefer these because it's more realistic than texting.
DeleteI agree with Lili because i think it is important to talk to people you know that you cant hang out with all the time but if u have the chance to talk to them either face to face or call them it would be better
DeleteI feel that the pros may outweigh the cons, but it's also just my opinion. Social media is a way to keep in touch with people who are far away, play some games, have fun, and even meet a new friend. But there's a problem already. You can be anyone you want to be on the internet. No one can tell you who you have to be either. That makes anyone dangerous. Your identity could be stolen, someone could stalk you, or even catfish you.
ReplyDeleteI disagree. I dont think the pros outweigh the cons because it is ruining our sleeping patterns, eyesight and much more.
DeleteThe internet and social media has a negative effect on kids, and teens with actually communicating with people in real life, they can't, but if it were through a screen there would be no problem. I feel like if you can't say what you want to say in person, then don't say it online. Also being on your phone, and other devices is bad for your health, it is bad for your eyes. Social media is a great thing but also bad.
ReplyDeleteI agree Mo, social media can have a negative effect on kids. Being online to long can effect your eye sight from staring at a screen.
DeleteThis is true ,there is so many negative affects that teens and kids are exposed to.
DeleteYou are correct, there is an abundance of negative effects on teens and young adults
DeleteI agree with jackie about the catfishing thing, its a real thing so be careful
DeleteI think their are some negative and positive effects from social media. Some negative effects are, people start rumors about other people, it can ruin friendships, and the lack of being social in real life. Some positive effects are, social media is easier to get in contact with other people, and you can see what is going on in the world.
ReplyDeletePeople can be very mean online, and cyber bulling is a problem, but if people can get past that fact the online world is a great use for everyone, like shopping, keeping in touch with people/family, and just looking on social media like facebook and snapchat.
Deletei agree with you mo lots of people get bullied online because they can't say it to your face
DeletePeople that bully online are never good they are horrible and they ruin lives because they think they are safe because they dont say it to their face
DeleteThe average person spends 4 hours a day on there mobile device. Thats 1460 hours a year on your phone. You could be doing so many more useful things in your life with all that time wasted on your phone.
ReplyDeleteYou make a very good point shane i agree with you 100% what are we doing with our lives wasting all this time on social media when we could start new things
DeleteThe positive effects of social media are being able to interact and communicate with others. Plus you can use social media to share what is happening in your life, and go online shopping. The negative effects of social media are online bullying and other stuff etc.

ReplyDeletei agree with you positve and negative effects on social media
DeleteThe positive side of being on the internet is that you can talk to family who don't live close or friends who have moved away. You can also connect with friends or family that you haven't seen or heard from in a long time. The negative sides of being on the internet is that if you're looking at a screen for a long period of time it could damage your eyes. A couple other negative sides is bullying, rumors, and you could potentially post something you aren't suppose to and give out personal information.
ReplyDeletei agree with your positive statements, social media is goo dto keep in touch with your family
DeleteI like your statement, it is positive to connect with your family but it's also important to think about your health when looking at a screen for so long.
DeleteThe positives of having social media is that you can text people that are far away from you. You can also connect with your friends that don't live around here. The negative side is that there is a lot of bullying on social media.
ReplyDeletei agree with your statement of how it is negative and positive, and what you stated about them
DeleteI think there are some negative and positive effects of the internet. One negative effect is how we communicate with each other. We don't talk face to face as much as we do on the internet. A positive effect that i think is great is that we can talk to people around the world. We can keep in touch with family and friends. You can see what is happening around the world.
ReplyDeletei personally think that social media is good and bad, good because you can talk to friends from far away or that have moved away, bad because people tend to go it too often, rather than talk face to face.
ReplyDeleteI think your statement is correct. I like how you mentioned that face that we can talk to people for away.
DeleteI agree with you abbey, talking to new people is a good thing and also connecting with your old friends.
DeleteI think its more our fault then anybody elses we all just get addicted and dont really communicate much besides over some form of social media and its not good for anybody we lose a lot of writing skills just over text there is lots of positives and using it for good things then there is a lot of negatives and ways you can use it in a bad way
ReplyDeleteI believe that social media can be a fun, good thing but i also believe that its a bad, negative thing. Teens can have a positive outcome on social media if they make the right choices and don't do anything stupid. Teens can also have a negative experience if they make poor decisions.
ReplyDeletei think it is effecting are life's because we are spending so much time on our phones in stead of doing school work or helping around your house or whatever you need to do but in stead you would just scroll through facebook or play games or go on social media
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Ethan. We could be doing things more productive and useful.
Deletei agree with lili about how social media can be a good thing to because if you have family that lives far away you can talk with them on social media and if we didn't have social media we wouldn't be able to do that, we would have to travel to go see them and which that is good to but we don't always have that time on our hands and also it costs a lot of money to travel too.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Hannah how she said teens can makes positive outcome on social media if they make the right choices and don't do anything stupid. And she also said Teens can also have negative experience if they make poor decisions. I think thats a really good answer to how social media can be bad and good, good job Hannah on pointing that out
ReplyDeleteI think social media is a horrible thing that is ruining childhoods for kids. I remember when I was younger I would go outside and play with all the kids in my neighborhood. I had so much fun, but as we got older we just sat inside on our phones. I didn't realize that I was becoming addicted to my tablet and cell phone. I wish I would've stayed off of it more and enjoyed my younger years.
ReplyDeleteMy opinion on social media is that it is stupid and it is ruining our lives. I don't use instagram, facebook, or twitter because I live perfectly fine without it. Social media is a waste of time.
